A worn or failing Z motor often shows up as uneven engraving depth across the plate, the tool not lifting cleanly between characters, the head dropping or stopping at the wrong height, or a buzzing or knocking noise when the Z axis moves. In some cases the machine stops with an error during initialization because the head cannot reach its home position. If the Z mechanism moves freely by hand and the wiring is good, replace the motor.
