Pulleys guide and support the drive belt or wire as the carriage moves across the machine. Once the bearing is worn, the pulley no longer turns freely: you may hear a squeak, rumble or grinding sound during carriage moves, feel roughness when moving the carriage by hand with the power off, or see uneven lines because the belt is being dragged.
