The cap top sits in the service station and closes over the print head whenever the carriage returns home. It keeps the nozzles moist between jobs and forms the seal the pump needs to pull ink through the head during cleaning. Once the rubber lip is worn, cracked or coated with dried ink, cleanings become ineffective, nozzle checks deteriorate after the machine has been idle and ink may collect where it should not. A new cap top restores a reliable seal.
