The power unit converts mains AC into the DC supply used by the printer's boards, motors and other electronics. A failing unit usually produces obvious symptoms: the printer does not switch on at all, the power lamp lights but the machine never finishes initialising, the printer resets or shuts down during printing, or motor and carriage errors appear because the supply sags under load.
