Roland part W704410040 (ASSY,LINEAR ENCODER CG1107) is the linear encoder assembly for the CAMM-1 GR-640, GR-540 and GR-420 cutting plotters. The encoder reads the exact position of the moving carriage along the rail and feeds that information back to the main board, which allows the GR series to cut quickly while keeping fine detail accurate. This is a genuine, original Roland part – not a copy or compatible replacement.

If the encoder is dirty, scratched or faulty, the machine can no longer trust its position readings. Typical symptoms are position or motor errors that stop the job, a carriage that overshoots or vibrates when it stops, contour cuts that do not close or drift slightly across the width and cutting that gets worse at higher speeds. Cleaning is worth trying first, but a damaged encoder needs to be replaced.
