Every time the carriage returns to its home position, the cap top lifts against the heads to seal the nozzle plates. This keeps the ink from thickening in the nozzles and gives the cleaning pump an airtight path to draw ink through the heads. With use the cap lip loses elasticity, collects dried ink or gets nicked by the head, and then cleanings no longer recover missing nozzles and print quality drifts after the printer has been idle. Fitting a new cap top restores the seal and keeps maintenance cycles effective.
