The cap top is the rubber-lipped cup that the print head rests on whenever the carriage is parked. It stops the nozzles from drying out and seals the head during cleaning so the pump can pull ink and trapped air through it. A cap that has hardened, torn or collected dried ink no longer forms that seal, so cleanings stop working, nozzles clog after the printer has been off and print quality drops. Changing the cap top restores proper capping and helps protect the head.
